Obama, the big Twitter winner

This tweet, from @BarackObama, was sent a few hours before the final scores of the elections:

In that span of time, it became the most retweeted tweet of all time. In that span of time, the note-image combo was retweeted — as of this writing — 298,318 times.

Not only that, but another Obama victory tweet garnered 167,939 retweets tonight in the space of just under 40 minutes:

This happened because of you. Thank you.

Which means that President Obama gained another victory tonight: Not only did he retain the presidency, but he outsted none other than … Justin Bieber. The singer — before tonight — held the record for the most retweeted tweet, at (as of this writing) 223,376 retweets:

The president also ousted Green Bay Packers offensive linesman T.J. Lang (98,688 retweets):

Fuck it NFL.. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs.

… and Floyd Mayweather (89,055 retweets):

Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see.

We’re not waiting for the others to concede. Barack Obama is the clear Twitter winner. Obviously, this is the victory the president will be savoring most tonight.

Elect to connect

Share more with your voters and constituents through a Google+ Page

By creating a Google+ Page for your public office or campaign, you and your staff can promote an issue, platform or cause across the web. You can put a +1 button anywhere on the web that you’d like for people to support your content, and you can connect your Google+ Page to your website and Google search results, via Google Direct Connect. Regularly posting interesting content, engaging with your followers by asking questions, and sharing photos and videos are all ways to keep people coming back for more.

Show what you support, and who supports you with +1

Google+ allows you to group followers into Circles, so you can tailor messages to different groups of voters or constituents. In the future, you can also live stream your Hangout on YouTube for other interested parties to follow – a handy tool for communicating with voters.

Google+ lets you easily upload, edit and share photos of your campaign wherever you are. With Instant Upload, photos you take with an Android device can be stored automatically online, so you can access them on Google+ in one click. If you allow geo-tagging to locate your pictures, constituents can also virtually follow you on the road.

Britney Spears is most followed on Google Plus

Ahead of her early 30th birthday this week, Britney Spears has recently dethroned Google CEO Larry Page as Google+’s most-followed person.

Roughly 775,000 people follow the pop star’s Google+ account. In comparison, 15.4 million fans “Like” her Facebook page and 11.4 million followers monitor her Twitter activity.

Google+ was once dominated by techies and the usual early adopters but has been attracting big-name celebrities and brands, who regularly post and incite heavy engagement. Three of the top five most-circled users, for example, are Spears, Snoop Dogg and Tyra Banks, according to Social Statistics.

Eddie Stobart: the history of a British Brand

For many people, lorry legend Edward Stobart changed the face of freight and built up one of Britain’s biggest brands. But how did he create such a phenomenon?

Stobart Group Ltd (trading as Stobart Group) is a large British multimodal logistics company, with interests in Transport and Distribution, Estates, Infrastructure and Civils, Air and Biomass, through operations in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Belgium. The company is incorporated in Guernsey but has operational head offices in Carlisle, Cumbria and Widnes,Cheshire but hopes eventually to re-locate its Carlisle, Cumbria offices to a new, purpose-built building at Carlisle Lake District Airport, where it owns a 150-year lease expiring in 2150.

Started by ‘Steady’ Eddie Stobart in the 1950s as an agricultural business in Cumbria, the company was incorporated as Eddie Stobart Ltd. on 23 November 1970 as a haulage firm, eventually passing to his son, Edward Stobart. After a series of complex takeovers, the Stobart company has developed from a haulage company to an intermodal logistics company, achieving a stock market listing without an IPO through a reverse takeover of the Westbury Property Fund. Following the step down of Edward in 2003, the Stobart family is now represented in the business through Edward’s brother William Stobart.

In 1976 Edward and the fleet of eight lorries moved to Carlisle to be closer to the M6 motorway.

oana vasiliuA lot of hard work, never declining an order, and a virtual paranoia about keeping his lorries, characterised by their Tautliner bodies, immaculately clean eventually paid off, and Edward started to get orders from larger businesses. One of the key success factors for the company was its specific emphasis on building a strong reputation and corporate image. For example, in the 1980s and 1990s, if any driver was caught not wearing a tie while on duty, he or she could face disciplinary action. Similarly, the company had a policy that all drivers must wave back and honk their horn in the traditional truck-driver fashion when signalled by a passer-by or “Eddie spotter” to do so.

Other key elements in its growth at this time were the introduction of a new management team in 1986 and the opening, on 1 April 1987, of its first depot in the English Midlands .

If cleaning up the industry’s image was Edward Stobart’s triumph, then giving lorries female names was his masterstroke.

The first was named Twiggy, after the model, and later there was a Tammy and a Dolly, after singers Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton.

Today, the fleet includes a Laura Abbey, an Angela Rachel and an Elizabeth Jane – with the privilege of naming new lorries being that of official Stobart fan club members, albeit after a three-year wait.

So how did such a simple marketing tool – female names and fleet numbers – become such a big phenomenon?

Steve Hayes, editor of Trucking magazine, says an off-the-cuff remark by a BBC Radio 2 broadcaster about 10-15 years ago was one of the catalysts.

“It was just a remark on a breakfast show, but it seemed to fire imaginations,” he says.

Glenn Patterson, marketing manager of the fan club, says Eddie Stobart: Trucks & Trailers, on Channel 5, also boosted the fan base.

But branding expert Jonathan Gabay says sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.

“Stobart is not just names, it is the people behind the names. It’s a brand for the people, being driven by the people.”

But he says Edward Stobart was really “quite exceptional” in what he achieved.

“Very few brands become legend in their own brand lifetime. And this wasn’t the Apple iPad, a cool, technology brand. The idea of a haulage company capturing the imagination is quite remarkable.”

By 2000 the enlarged Eddie Stobart Group Ltd. consisted of three divisions: Eddie Stobart Ltd., Eddie Stobart International and Eddie Stobart Promotions. Today, there are about 2,200 Eddie Stobart trucks on the road and the firm’s official fan club boasts no fewer than 25,000 members.

“He wanted to smarten up the image of truck drivers and the industry – and to his credit, he did,” says Mr Dossetter.

Kim Kardashian’s marriage: PR ?

If PR Daily is writing about her, then is big. Not only news for fashionable magazines, but an example for PR itself.

The Kardashian family provokes strong feelings. You either love’em or you hate’em.

Whether the reality stars inspire devotion or dry heaving will likely dictate your reaction to the widely reported divorce between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.

The pair was married two months ago in a much-hyped ceremony that was a big television event. While the couple shot a season of reality television in New York, rumors swirled that the relationship was on the rocks.

And now, 72 days after they said “I do,” Kim has filed for divorce.

Thus far, it has inspired the Twitter hashtag “Thingslongerthankimsmarriage,” which has been trending since word of the divorce leaked on Monday.

Days or weeks or months from now, Kim will do the People interview. She might talk to Barbara Walters before the Super Bowl. Humphries will talk to Matt Lauer. And we’ll all cast judgments on a relationship about which we have no idea—but that’s exactly why Kim made a reported $10,358.80 an hour while she was married to Humphries.

So, let’s judge. What do you think: Will the (soon to be) twice-divorced Kim come out of this looking more like Elizabeth Taylor—or a desperate fame junky?

My personal opinion is that it’s all about advertising. Glam life is better online, offline and at TV!

LinkedIn magic

Of course you all heard about LinkedIn, the social platform for professional networking and how important is to be there in order to be head-hunt at some point. Today I was reading IJNet, and I found this article about a free tool of LinkedIn and I want to share it with you.

To make LinkedIn work, though, you need to do more than post a resume. Recommend others, post questions, answer them, build a strong network and your visibility will rise. With visibility comes opportunity.

Signal

One of LinkedIn’s cool, free tools is Signal, which helps LinkedIn users extract more value from the growing amount of content on the careers site and Twitter accounts by helping users slice and dice a tsunamic newsfeed down to a stream they actually can use.

It works like this: There is a “Search Updates” window just under the “What should your network know?” window near the top of the screen. Type in the term you are interested in, and LinkedIn will extract all the relevant messages from its general newsfeed. With 70 million users in 150 industries, there is a lot in that general feed.

When you click after the search term, it will open up a three column-page with the  selected posts running down the main central column. Headlines on that subject, passed along by others, are in the right rail. The left rail lets you refine your search further.

For example, you can ask LinkedIn Signal to serve up posts by people in an industry, such as newspapers or television, who mention “job opening.” LinkedIn shows how closely you are connected to those people, where they work and, with another sort, who else they work with.

You can see what people at one company are saying about another. For example, I looked up what people at The New York Times were saying about Rupert Murdoch’s The Daily.

A freelancer can use Signal to see what the buzz is in a particular industry, and sources with contact information will be right there in the search.

Someone going off on a job interview easily could ask Signal what people in that company are commenting about, check their profiles and get a good sense of what is on the minds of the people and take that knowledge into the interview.

Customize Twitter Profile Picture

I’m sure everyone landing on my blog is a Twitter user also. You probably noticed that Twitter improved with a service that have an image gallery feature that displays recent photos that you’ve shared or retweeted from other users.
